A note
Coita was, before all else, a maker of marks. He chose the most demanding of the graphic arts — chromolithography and drypoint, gouache and tempera — media in which the hand cannot lie.
His compositions read less as depictions than as fields of notation: rhythmic, accumulative, gestural, organised the way a page of script is organised — by cadence and interval rather than by perspective. A drypoint by Coita is closer to a sentence than to a window.
